The VM Vending Machine enables end users to order pre-configured virtual machines while preserving IT’s control, security and compliance requirements. The VMVM serves as the ultimate enabler of ITaaS and the self service data center.

Just plug the unit into a power source and let your end users order Virtual Machines by the push of a few buttons.

Need a Monster VM to run a massive database? No Problem.
Need 50 virtual desktop VM’s for a new department – done.
Backed up against a wall with an aggressive application project timeline and need resource’s quick – look no further.

The Virtual Machine Vending Machine – Powered by VMware.
100% automated, pooled and abstracted.

Refresh cycles.

In Information Technology sales, we love the refresh. Out with the old, in with the new. Bigger, better, faster.

A combination of forces are typically at work that drive a refresh cycle. Things like an new or upgraded application that require greater performance from the infrastructure layer. The business’s desire to drive out IT costs while increasing it’s ability to react to an opportunity in the market. Users demanding more flexibility, more choice & IT simplicity. All of which are forces to a refresh.

As consumers, we refresh our technology just as business’s do and our refresh is often based on a similar set of drivers. We want faster, smarter & simpler. We want IT to enhance our lives, not complicate it. We want IT to give us more time to focus on the things that really matter. Our smart phones are now our GPS. Our Digitial Camera’s. Voice Recorders. Camcorders. Contact book. Address book. Etc.

As an IT sales professional, are you influencing your customers technology refresh cycles or waiting for one to happen? Influence and win.

I am a big fan of John Carpenter films, especially the Terminator series. My favorite is part one of the three part series. Part one is the film that sets the stage or what becomes a wild ride. For those that know the storyboard, we (humans) design a system (servers/software) to enhance our national defense system. The system, Skynet, once activated, becomes self aware, self managing and rips control from and it’s creators and then declares humans the enemy and essentially wipes us out. Not the desired outcome hence the title of my post – Building Skynet – in a good way.. : )

Fast forward to 2012 - Real world.

Millions of organizations around the world have reaped the instant benefits of virtualization, both in flexibility, CapEx and Opex savings. These organizations have been deploying management & automation tools from vmware at a rapid pace to further drive costs out of the data center & increase the quality of their virtual infrastructure.

Reduce costs. Increase agility while maintaining control. (and addressing security in an entirely new way)

We learned from the Terminator series that even though you build a system that is self aware, self managing, self healing and highly secure, if you don’t have control, it can do more harm than good. With vmware, you remain in control of both your private (on-prem), public (off-prem) and/or hybrid (blended) clouds. This leads me to a question..

Why give up control to an Amazon EC2 or Microsoft Azure cloud?
Will it backfire and be your own personal Skynet?

After watching the Academy Awards last night and seeing a black & white film win the coveted movie of the year award, I started to think back to the first B&W film I saw – The Wizard of Oz. That moment was magical for millions of people when Dorothy first steps out of her house after it was swept away in a tornado to a new world of color. What a great way to introduce a new technology to the world – a mythical world called Oz..

This transformation from black & white to color, from old technology to the next generation, changed movie making going forward. Is Virtualization, which is the catalyst to Cloud Computing, our modern day IT “Oz?”

When you first introduce Virtualization to a customer – it’s magical. It’s like you are providing them the keys to Oz. Taking them from chaos (think tornado scene from the movie) to a world of new possibilities yet to be discovered. Many Small & Medium sized customers are still in black & white, yet to go Virtual.

Be the one that introduces Oz.
